EMIR OF KANO SANUSI LAMIDO DEFENDS HIMSELF ON MARRYING 18 YEAR OLD PRINCESS AS FOURTH WIFE
- The lady in question is 18 and therefore legally of age to marry under all laws and certainly under Muslim law.
- She is proceeding for her undergraduate education in the UK in January. She had an A in computer science in her O levels and plans to get a degree in computer science.
- Each and every one of my wives is a university graduate and some have worked and then stopped and in each case the choice was purely theirs.
- It is a tradition in Kano that emirs and princes in choosing wives consider issues beyond the individual. The family is in every sense a social unit. My predecessor was married to princesses from Ilorin, Katsina and Sokoto.
- The relationship between the late Lamido of Adamawa Aliyu Musdafa the father of the current Lamido is well known. Lamido Aliyu was the first emir turbaned after emir Sanusi I and they remained close until Sanusi’s death.
- My own relationship with the current Lamido dates back to 1981 when he was Ciroma and commissioner for works. By the way the Lamido and I are not illiterates we know what we are doing and he does have a PhD in Engineering.
- My own mother was married in Adamawa and lived there for more than two decades and I have eight younger brothers and sisters from there.
- It is therefore natural that if I choose to marry from another kingdom Adamawa would be the first choice for me and I am extremely happy to strengthen these long historical bonds.
- The young lady in question gave her free consent and even after the contract the wedding will not happen for a few years. By then she may be 21. If she freely consents to this I do not know on what moral grounds anyone has a grouse. She is an adult, she gave her consent, and her education is not being in anyway interrupted.
- The real issue is that people do not accept cultural difference. And you can see it in the approach to these issues. I am supposed to be urbane and western educated. Yes but I am not European. I am a northern Nigerian Fulani Muslim brought up in a setting exactly like the one my children are being brought up in.
If you read this and it improves your understanding of this issue that is fine. If it does not just remember it is not your life, it is not your daughter and you are not my wife therefore it is not your business.
I obviously cannot stoop to the level of responding publicly to these kinds of articles. I have always been an advocate of girls marrying after maturing. I personally like the minimum age of 18 even though I understand those who say 16 is fine and indeed this is the law in most so called advanced countries.
Is this something that I expect a European or western trained or feminist mind to appreciate or endorse? Not at all. But has any American been bothered about my views on men marrying men or women marrying women who frankly I find primitive and bestial? No and my views do not matter. These are cultural issues.
Even in Nigeria I have heard all this stuff as in Pius article about “north” and northerners. Again it is a failure to respect difference. There are parts of this country where parents expect their daughters to live with their boyfriends for years and actually get pregnant before they marry. It has become culture. We do not have that in the north and if your daughter gets pregnant before marriage she brings nothing but shame to the name. But we do not issue condemnations. We agree that this is how they choose to live. And I can give many other examples.
When people use the term libido they do themselves injustice. First of all it shows how they view women and marriage. Women are nothing but the object of sexual desire. Marriage is nothing but sexual gratification. Well I am sorry but in my tradition it is not. Beauty and attraction rank third after religion and lineage in the choice of a wife.
They see an 18 year old young lady. I see a princess of noble birth whose mother is also a princess, and who has been brought up in a good Muslim home. This is the kind of woman that is prepared for giving birth to princes and bringing them up for the role expected of them in society.
Marriage is both social and political. Expanding the links of Kano which have already been established by my predecessors through inter-marriage with Katsina, Sokoto, Ilorin, Katagum, Ningi, Bauchi etc to Adamawa is an important and significant step and this is obvious to anyone with a sense of how royal families work and Ibn Khaldun’s sociological concept of Asabiyyah.
When the Emir of Kano marries it has to be something beyond what he personally desires to what is appropriate for that position and the expectations of the people he represents. You don’t just pick up any girl on the street. And by the way, for those who shout libido, sex is cheap and available everywhere in all shapes and sizes and all colours if that is what they want. And all ages too. Marriage is a very different proposition. The mother of your children has to be something other than, not at least much more than a mere object of sexual fantasy. But if you do not know that you need to buy yourself a brain.
I have daughters. And they know they can only marry from certain backgrounds. I always prefer family. When my daughter wanted to marry Mouftah Baba Ahmed’s son and she asked me, knowing my views on family, I told her Mouftah is family. And this is not about me and Mouftah or me an Hakeem or Nafiu. No. It goes back to Baba Ahmed and Emirs Sanusi and Bayero. And the same rule applies to my sons. And it applied to me as well.
It is, I am sure, very strange that I should even bother to comment on this. But it would be hypocritical for me to just keep quiet so long as these things are being posted and commented upon explicitly or in a snide manner. There was no secrecy in the marriage fatiha. The date was fixed and it was to be done in the central mosque after Friday prayers.
The day before we had a tragedy in Saudi Arabia and decided the fatiha must be very low key as a mark of respect for the dead. All traditional rulers in Adamawa were there, as were governors and commissioners, members of my own emirate council and Adamawa people. There is nothing here to hide or be apologetic about.
The emirs of Adamawa have shown love to my parents and grandparents and it is a sign of my appreciation of their love that i marry their daughter. This is the highest statement of friendship and loyalty on both sides.
Again if you understand this this is fine. If you do not, buy yourself a brain, A la Pius.
In any event this is my one and final and only comment on this. And I am making it out of respect for NC members.

Nigerian President Mohammed Buhari has confirmed that he will remain Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum. According to Sahara Reporters, the President divulged this information to Reporters in New York during his United Nations General Assembly visit to the United States, which is still ongoing. This revelation has caused a lot of back and forth on Nigerian Twitter and other Social Media sites.
Many people are of the opinion that it is wrong for the President to appoint himself as the nation's petroleum Minister, when there are qualified people that can take up the role.

While obviously to GATHER means, to collect, to bring together, muster, assemble, accumulate etc.
In summary, GARNER serves as a synonym for GATHER.

AT THE GLOBACOM SKIDE AND BOUNCE TOUR ON SATURDAY
My husband and I got passes for the Glo Slide and bounce event at Eko Hotels from a family friend when we went for a visit on Friday, I was happy .We learnt the event was Saturday evening, which was yesterday .My Network Glo,would later send me an invite via SMS, just like they did to all Glo users.
We decided to go, after all we are still in the holiday mood. We left the house some minutes to 6.00pm,got to the venue on time as there was no traffic jam. We secured the best sit in the front row, it was a vantage position.
The show had already started when we got inside. Dija,one of the females under the Mavin Record label was already performing, the rest of her crew later joined her on stage.That is Korede Bello and Reekado Banks.We were definitely having fun. Afterwards Korede gave a solo performance and the crowd went gaga when he sang his hit song 'Godwin'.I stood up to wriggle my waist to the rhythm.
When we were still reeling from the fun from Korede's performance, host for the night, Comedian Yaw, called on stage funny Actress Funke Akindele and Comedian Helen Paul, who made us crack our ribs to their witty sayings and funny jokes.
As if that was not entertaining enough, all round entertainer per excellence, the Koko Master Dbanj mounted the stage. People stood up, rushed from their seats to the stage to get a better view of him. He sang his new songs and the crowd sang along. He took us down memory lane with his old songs. His performance should be rated A, it was topnotch. He also blessed the audience with his Koko Garri. He shared so much that I lost count. Although I didn't get one, but his songs are enough for me.
After Dbanj came, the Mr. Incredible himself, M.I, who is arguably Nigeria's greatest Rapper. He came on stage with his equally talented brother Jesse Jags, who also sang some of his own songs. Then M.I made the crowd go crazy when he started churning out is popular tunes. I was mesmerized, wished it would not end.
Next to perform was the Black Diamond himself, Wande Coal,the one with the sonorous voice. As soon as he said 'shawty go low low low low' one would think the crowd was possessed! People danced their hearts out! As the great performer that he is, he also scored very high marks in my books.
Then to take us to the climatic final of the night, Mr. Flavor came and did his thing, he whined his waist to our pleasure, he sang and we san along too, we danced ,made merry and had a fun outing generally.
What a night, to think at a point I almost shelved the idea of going out that day because I wanted to just lay in my bed and sleep. I totally enjoyed myself.

A social media commentator/critic is reportedly behind bars after he was arrested on Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun's orders.
His offence is said to be some posts on Facebook where he critiqued the Governor and his administration.There is an ongoing hashtag on twitter creating awareness on the issue.His arrest is unlawful and he has been held in police custody for more that 24 hours.

HOW MY DAY WENT YESTERDAY
Yesterday was Sallah and I had promised to honor invitations, I only made it to one venue owing to the heavy rains. As a matter of fact,I almost didn't leave the house, I managed to drag myself out of the bed,took a shower,got my daughter prepared(hubby has loads of office backlog,so he opted out) and we set out.
I got to Agege in due time,there was no traffic, if only Lagos roads can be as sane as this everyday.The journey was so smooth,I enjoyed it.On getting to the Sallah party, i realized my sister and her hubby were already there,so we sat down to the business of the day.Fried meat,cold drinks were offered before I could even take a seat.Wow, I said to myself this is how a sallah break should go.
We made merry,ate,ate some more,had my fill,my daughter had the utmost fun,she was extremely happy with the funfare.On top of that,i was given a takeaway package home,yippe!
On my way home,I branched to buy fuel,before you could say Jack Robinson! There was a heavy torrent of rain,the whole clouds became so dark,I thought of parking and wait for the rain to subside, but then time was not really on my side,it was still a long way from home.Thankfully we got home soon enough and prepared for the next outing for the day.
Yes around 7.00pm,we set out for church.My church was having a musical concert and almost all the big names in the Nigerian gospel music industry were in attendance.We praised God like there was no tomorrow, I really danced to the extent that, as I am typing right now,my body aches. Kore gave a superlative performance, we were thrilled to nice choreography by popular dance group Spirit of David.The midnight crew also gave an awesome performance as expected.And others too numerous to mention.
We left the venue after the last performance of the night by Big Bolaji.Got home around 6.00am and had a sound sleep.Let us just say I am enjoying my break so far.

My favorite part I'd Sallah as a child,apart from eating fried Ram,was standing at the balcony and watching Muslim faithfuls garbed in their gorgeous attires going to the Popular Morcaz mosquemosque which was very close to my house.
I would watch the procession as they go and also come out after the prayers.It was fun back in those days.

These are definitely trying times for Nigeria's Senate President. Today he appears before the Code of Conduct Tribunal to face all charges leveled against him. He was accused to falsifying and not declaring all his assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau .

Her Character in How to Get Away With Murder ,Analise Keating ,is one Character that makes you want to practice as a Lawyer. She is so fiery and excellent in that role.
It is good to see Black women winning on major platforms, it gives you hope that there is much that can be achieved and the sky is big enough.
POPE AND FIDEL CASTRO MEETS
These men are two powerful figures in the world. And there meeting cannot be talked about in passing just like that. The Pope Francis met the Cuban President and his Brother Former Cuban President Fidel Castro in Havana during his recent Cuban Trip.
The Pontiff met the two leaders after the historic Mass in Havana, the Cuban Capital. They had a brief meeting discussing politics and world affairs.He was however unable to meet the dissidents who were warded off.

MAMA HID AWOLOWO GOES HOME
Matriarch of the Awolowo family,Chief Obafemi Awolowo's jewel of inestimable value has gone to rest.
Mama HID Awolowo was 99 as at the time of her death yesterday.She died in Ikenne home,surrounded by loved ones.
Chief Awolowo's widow was known for her immense contributions to Nigerian politics especially in the South West,where her husband was the Former premier of the region.She stood by her husband throughout all the period he was incarcerated during his lifetime.
She lived a good life and will be sorely missed.

BAD NEWS FOR FROZEN CHICKEN AND TURKEY LOVERS
Most people I know buy frozen chicken/turkey at one time or the other to cook their soups or make stews. I am Chicken lover myself, and as much as I try to avoid the frozen ones, I still buy them because they are easily available, i mean ,almost three shops sell on my street alone.
Some importers of Frozen chicken, however got into trouble today as men of the Nigerian customs intercepted and has seized 37m Naira worth of Frozen chicken. The goods will be destroyed totally. What a loss for the business owners, although I heard it is contraband and they have been warned repeatedly not to import the frozen poultry into the country.

CHIGOZIE OBIOMA MAKES SHORTLIST FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE
29 year Old Nigerian,Chigozie Obioma,who has been dubbed the 'heir' to literary icon Chinua Achebe, in a New York Times book Review ,has made the Shortlist for the 2015 Booker Prize for his book The Fishermen.
He is, effective Fall 2015, an Assistant Professor of literature and creative writing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His Debut novel The Fishermen is set in th 1990s Nigeria and details the journey of four brothers.

Over1,300staff in the company were shown the door according to sources in the organization. As a result of trying to unionize, they were given the boot.
On the outside, the product which as been in the Nigerian Market for over a decade seem to be doing so well, as it is sold in all the nooks and crannies of Lagos. It is the darling drink for most people stuck in traffic in Lagos.
