HOW EXPENSIVE IS YOUR WEAVE?

I was inside a store at a popular mall here in lagos recently when i overheard a conversation between these two beautiful ladies,what caught my attention was  the statement ' You mean that lady? She is not classy at all,she still wears synthetic hair,she fixed Darling Yaki weave the last time I saw her'. Apparently,one of the ladies is trying to describe the subject of their discourse  in a derogatory manner because her weave is not good enough,at least according to her.Indie Arie's chart topping song,'Not my hair'quickly came to my mind.


See,in this clime,wearing a cheap weave is now seen as a monumental crime.For those who do not know what 'Darling Yaki' is,let me quickly explain that it is one of the cheapest non-human hair weaves(weave on) we have in the market.It is synthetic as the  weaves in that category are popularly known. It probably should be around  eight hundred  to a thousand Naira,not too sure,it used to be five hundred Naira when the economy was good.

Back to the conversation i overheard,the clause was that the weave on the lady being discussed is cheap and wearing it depicts she is  not ' there' yet..As we all know ,ours is a very materialistic  society  and for some years now,to identify a big girl,it  starts from the type of human hair she has fixed on her head.Be it mongolian,Indian,Peruvian or Colombian,just name it ,with the commonest  being the Brazilian weave.Even amongsts these ones mentioned above,there are still levels.

It has been said as a joke several times over  that the cost of these weaves and wigs are enough to start  building projects,say build a nice bungalow, as these bundles of hair costs a fortune,from fifty thousand Naira upwards.There are so many justifications  for buying expensive weaves,especially from the economic point of view . If one can afford them,I say go ahead and do you.They can last you for more than a year,since they are natural  hair so one would get her money's worth,all one needs to  do is maintain them,hence,they are like a sort of 'investment'. So yes they do have advantages.To use and  be reused all over again as the owner pleases till they no longer appeal to the buyer.

Now to the cruz of this whole debacle,the problem however is that right now,some people measure your level of success with the type of weave one fixes. Ladies size themselves up based on the type of weave they have on at any material time.Which is why many young ladies in a bid not to be seen as lagging behind would do anything to get a Brazilian weave or any of its variants,when all they can really afford is a 'Darling Yaki' or the good old Sade Adu hairstyle.

One wonders how we have now found ourselves in situations  whereby to be seen as belonging to a certain class,one has to be judged by how expensive the mane on the head is,even when it is obvious that they do not come cheap and whatever happened to the notion of preference?

What happened  to the term 'live and let live'? That an individual chose to be conservative  or cannot genuinely  afford these luxuries shouldn't  be an opportunity for them to be looked down upon or a yardstick by which progress is measured.These factors have made people who aren't sure of themselves in the first place become more insecure,they battle with low self esteem,as a result of trying to  keep up with the joneses.

This year 2017,I do hope we all get our priorities right and the ones who derive pleasure in antagonizing others based on their weave choices should learn to let people be themselves.Success and achievements are not measured by the number or bundles of human or exotic hair one has on,rather by the values an individual can add to the society and the world at large.I see women like Ibukun Awosika,Okonjo Iweala ,Oby Ezekwesili, Amina Mohammed,Mitchelle Obama,making giant strides ,these are women who can afford all the Human hairs in the world,yet  I doubt if the weave another woman has on is what bothers them.

P.S - Still saving to buy myself that very lovely human Hair wig I have been eyeing for a while,once I do that,God save that wig as it will be my go-to hair for the most part of the year (chuckles).
