WHEN WE LOVED AND ATE OUR KOKORO

Let me take you on a trip down memory lane. Let us do a throw back to that time when as kids we took delight in eating our Kokoro and relished it.

Unless you lived a sheltered life in highbrow parts of Ikoyi or VI, chances are, while playing Suwe with your friends by the roadside you spot Iya Onikokoro (Kokoro vendor) You quickly buy Five naira worth and share amongst friends, God help you, a 'lolly' seller passes by, oh the joys of that complete package! You must remember begging your mum for that five Naira just so you could buy some?

For those who might genuinely feel lost on what Kokoro is, kokoro is a blend of grinded corn/maize mixed with a bit of sugar, little bit of pepper and other condiments then fried. The Mexicans call it Tortilla and they do love them some Tortillas, see?

In our attempt to raise 'tush' children we sometimes deprive them of the little pleasures that made up our childhood. Let them savor some of these local and healthier snacks. Deviate from the usual cheese balls, let them know what kokoro Alata feels like. Let them know that the sweet Hausa snack  Dankua is made from Sorghum. Let them play outdoors like we did with 'ten ten' with close monitoring of course.

So in the meantime, while you reminisce on those good old days, yours truly will be munching the few  remaining from the Kokoro stash..
