MAN HITS WIFE WITH A HAMMER DURING A DOMESTIC SQUABBLE

One wonders how two people who  once professed love for each other, have children by each other and have shared precious moments together  get to that dark point where they would treat themselves with so much disdain without a care in the world.

At what point did the love get so sour? These and many other questions comes to mind when we read sordid tales of physical harm being inflicted on women and in some cases men in some unions.

This very disturbing picture of the victim of domestic violence has gone viral in the Nigerian social media space. Said to have been married to her attacker for close to twenty years, this woman was pummeled to a grave extent and not satisfied with using his bare hands, this particular husband, who is allegedly a staff of Exxon Mobil also engaged  the use of a weapon. He hit his wife on the head with a hammer. She  could have died, but her proverbial personal chi was with her that day. As an observer, it seem as though his aim was to kill her or better yet, inflict grievous  bodily harm. She escaped death by the whiskers. She got lucky.

The issue of domestic  violence is very rampant in the Nigerian society, ours is a culture that extols  patriarcy, could that be the reason why men battering their wives is so rife? Knowing they might most likely get away with it. Domestic violence should not be condoned in whatever form,  the society must see to it that the women get justice. In this case, nothing Mrs Ekere could have done should have warranted  this kind of ill treatment.

We enjoin everyone to let us put our voices  together to condemn domestic violence in its  entirety. Let   an example be made of men such as this in order to send a note warning to others who are in the habit of battering their wives or  those planning to act in this beastly manner, that there are repercussions for such acts.
