ASOEBI CRAZE

As the title of this post suggests, buying Asoebi has become so endemic in our society that its not even funny!in a month an average sisi(young lady)knows where her pocket hurts over this trend, although it is not limited to we 'youngins'like the Americans will say,we actually met the trend from generations before us,ours mothers 'invested' in asoebi during their own time and even now,it is a never ending culture for all Nigerians, men are not even left out from this craze for uniformity at parties, what started as a Yoruba cultural phenomenom has now eaten deep into the fabrics of our society, that all tribes in Nigeria now suscribe to picking Asoebi for any event,be it an house warming ceremony, weddings, shop opening, just name it and you see people looking colourful in the uniformed attire.

I am not left out of the Asoebi craze and i will use myself as a case study, for someone who is quite sociable,i tend to buy a lot of Asoebi, and the annoying thing about it though is the fact that we don't really wear these outfits more than two times if we have to be sincere with ourselves, and to think that an average Asoebi costs nothing less than Three thousand Naira for the simplest Ankara fabric and i am just putting it mildly here..and for those who don't even  keep friends as such,at least there will be one sister or aunty in your family, church o, mosque, school, place of work whom you would be forced to buy asoebi from either because she is getting married or it is her dad's 60th birthday shindig,so you see one cannot really escape this palavar, what with the advent of BBM,Instagram and all other social medial platforms, babes would always like to showcase the latest styles and the accessories to go with it,not helping matters at all are the various attractive fabrics all over the market, from velvet to sequins, damask,French lace, you just name it,there is always an endless supply.

Nigerian Ladies love Asoebi to the extent that some ladies actually buy Asoebis for parties of people they do not have any affiliations with whatsoever, funny but true!you just tell them about the party and show the fabric and they are in,sounds ridiculous, but it happens, lol.

And here are the steps to actualize that look that leaves us all with our mouths agape on instagram and other platforms, looks that generate a lot of comments and likes:

  1. You loose sleep trying to find the best style for the fabric.

  2. Even when you buy five yards, there is this desire to add a fine fabric, just to bring out that unique style(except for the simple iro and buba, most times we buy another fabric to the said Asoebi *sigh*).

  3. Then you want to make sure you have a tailor who doesn't disappoint.

  4. Of course the big one,the amount the tailor would Charge! as an aside, sometimes i feel like learning how to make dresses because these fashion designers making lots of money !even if not for the business side of it,i will be able to sew my numerous Asoebis myself, lol.

  5. The last but not the least, the acceseories, shoes and bag to match the perfect outfit.

Wow,sometimes if one thinks about, the question that comes to mind is,is it really worth it?But in all modesty is key, learn to say no when you know you are not up to it financially, trust me,you do not want to run into debt all in the name of buying a fabric the tailor might even end up destroying!yes it happens a lot of times.

True talk BIBIIRE! Most times, we end up not wearing some after the party simply because they are too much or we don't like the particular style the asoebi is sewn. For me,asides from close friends, i buy when i feel like buying and still attend the party and don't give a damn that am wearing a different fabric or colour. Make dem talk, babe i no send o
