RIP BUCHI EMECHETA

Last year when Elechi Amadi died,I lamented that we were fast losing our literary icons. So imagine  my  shock and sadness when I heard the news that Buchi Emecheta is dead, indeed this woman, one of the women in Nigeria who broke the glass ceiling in the African literary scene has passed on.

BUCHI EMECHETA was one of my favourites. With over twenty classic books to her credit, this literary amazon, born on July 21,1944 ,wrote books that challenged patriachy, even though she claimed not to be a feminist, women's rights were mostly the core of the thematic preoccupation  in her books, she also addressed chauvinism and misogyny. She was a voice for women.

Her books are emancipating, insightful, intriguing  and educative. She describes the Nigerian society in a way all her readers are able to relate to.My favorite remains the novel titled Joys of Motherhood.

Rest in peace Madam Emecheta, your books are already  legacies you left behind  and your name has been imprinted in the sands of time.
