IS THE PLAN TO REGULATE SOCIAL MEDIA USE IN NIGERIA A PRIORITY?

This is an early morning rant, what is wrong with this country and largely this present Government?

As Amnesty international Opined, with the level of poverty ravaging this country, the Boko Haram war that is still raging on, contrary to what they want us to believe. It is the way people use the Social Media that is of utmost concern to this Government.

At the meeting held in Jos by the NCI,  according to Premium Times, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said there would be  regulations against what he termed fake news and hate speeches, good enough, you might say.

He went further to complain that Nigerians now rely so much on Social Media and that it might affect the 2019 general elections. I think that is the part of the communique that irks me. To think this Government rode on the coat tail of Social Media and at the same time used Social media to spread their 'change' slogan in order to garner votes. For them to turn around...

While i have no problems with criminalizing the act of spreading hate speeches and inciting speeches, we all know that there is an underlying reason for this so called social media regulation.

This impending clamp down on Social media might just be one of the means of crushing any voice of dissent in this country. Time will surely tell.
